Vaccinations for East Africa

11.13.2009

One of the items travelers often overlook with their budget before visiting East Africa – and climbing Mt Kilimanjaro – is the price of the “recommended” vaccinations. One of Embark’s clients recently went to the travel clinic, and here are the recommended vaccinations – likely recommended from the Center for Disease Control – and their prices in 2009. If he were to get every vaccination, assuming he had none of these vaccinations in the past and no insurance to cover them, it would likely cost him near $800.

Office Visit $59.00
Vaccine Administration, first vaccine $19.00
Vaccine Administration, each additional $9.00
Hepatitis A – Adult $79.99
Hepatitis B – Adult $89.99
Influenza $34.99
Meningococcal Meningitis $134.99
Pneumococcal $59.99
Polio $54.99
Rabies ?
Tetanus $39.99
Typhoid Injection $69.99
Yellow Fever $109.99

Ultimately the choice is yours on what vaccinations you should, and should not take before entering East Africa. Remember, you will need proof of Yellow Fever. While it’s always smart to error on the side of being safe, it’s smart to do your research to determine if you really need all the recommended shots.
