Description
Join this five-day trek and journey deep into the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park. This epic adventure is designed for those ready to explore the wild, untamed beauty of the Rockies and push themselves through ever-changing alpine terrain. You’ll traverse high ridges and deep valleys, hike past roaring cascades, cross vibrant alpine meadows, and discover crystal-clear mountain lakes tucked beneath towering peaks.
Each day builds in both distance and challenge, gradually preparing you for the ultimate test: summiting two of the park’s high alpine peaks, where breathtaking panoramic views reward every step. Along the way, your guides will share expert tips on efficient mountain travel, from pacing and route-finding to staying light on your feet across rocky terrain. They’ll also bring the landscape to life, sharing stories of its geology, ecology, and the rich natural history that has shaped this extraordinary wilderness over millennia.
Beyond the hiking, each day is an opportunity to connect deeply with the mountains—to pause at a quiet lake, take in a sweeping ridge line, or watch the sunlight shift across jagged peaks. From cascading waterfalls to dramatic granite spires, every step offers a new perspective and a chance to feel fully immersed in one of North America’s most iconic landscapes. This is the way to truly experience Rocky Mountain National Park: challenging, rewarding, and unforgettable.
Once you arrive in Estes Park, you’ll gather that evening at your hotel to meet your guides and go over the days ahead.
We’ll get our first taste of the Colorado high country as we set out for today’s destination: Ouzel Lake. Nestled at the mouth of a high alpine gorge, Ouzel Lake lies beneath the towering 12,000 ft Ouzel Peak and is one of the many stunning lakes tucked into Wild Basin. Known for its rushing creeks and cascading waterfalls, Wild Basin will treat us to three impressive falls along our hike. Along the way, we’ll pass open meadows bursting with colorful wildflowers, and if we’re lucky, we may catch a glimpse of moose grazing in this vibrant alpine habitat. It’s a day full of classic Rocky Mountain scenery—high peaks, sparkling water, and the thrill of the wild around every turn.
Today is one of Rocky Mountain National Park’s quirkiest hikes. From Bear Lake, we’ll hit the trail for an 8.3-mile point-to-point trek that’s mostly downhill—yes, you get to enjoy the rare thrill of a downhill advantage! Along the way, you’ll pass five sparkling alpine lakes and wind your way through the full length of Odessa Gorge, one of the park’s most rugged and jaw-dropping corners. Who says you have to save the best for last?
Today we embark on our first summit climb, aiming for the top of Mount Ida. We’ll set out early in the morning, taking advantage of the cooler hours and the calm before the afternoon thunderstorms that are common in the high country. The trail rises steadily through alpine meadows and rugged granite slopes. As we ascend, you’ll notice the changing character of the landscape: wildflowers giving way to rocky outcrops, dense pine forests thinning into open tundra, and the crisp mountain air filling your lungs with every breath. Your guides will help you navigate the terrain, offering tips on efficient pacing, footing, and route-finding.
Reaching the summit is a moment to savor. From the top, you’ll be treated to sweeping panoramic views of the Rockies in all directions—jagged ridgelines, sparkling alpine lakes, and the deep valleys we’ve traveled through. It’s a perspective few get to experience firsthand, a sense of being truly immersed in the wild high country. After taking it all in and celebrating the climb, we’ll begin our careful descent, retracing our steps while reflecting on the challenge, the beauty, and the thrill of having conquered our first high alpine peak. This climb is as much about the journey as the summit itself, a true introduction to the adventure, skill, and wonder that the Rockies demand and reward.
Today we’ll take it a little easier, giving our legs a bit of a break before the challenge of our final summit day— but don’t think we’re taking the sights for granted. We’ll explore the famous Four Loops Trail, a route that winds up, down, and around a landscape sculpted by glaciers thousands of years ago.
As we move through this remarkable terrain, you’ll encounter sheer rock faces that rise dramatically from the valley floor, shimmering alpine lakes tucked into hidden corners, and sweeping vistas that showcase the power and patience of nature’s hand. The trail gently rolls through meadows and forests, giving your legs a chance to recover while your eyes feast on the incredible scenery.
Even at a slower pace, the landscape doesn’t let up. Water cascades over rocky ledges, cliffs glint in the morning sun, and every bend in the trail offers a new perspective on the rugged beauty of the Rockies. It’s a day to catch your breath, take in the details, and appreciate the scale and drama of this alpine world before we tackle our final, high- country climb.
This is it—our final day of hiking! Starting from the Bear Lake Trailhead, we’ll begin our ascent via the east ridge of Flattop Mountain, steadily climbing toward the Continental Divide.
The early morning climb carries a quiet magic: the cool air, the stillness of the high country, and the slow unveiling of peaks and valleys as the light shifts across the landscape. Reaching the summit of Flattop Mountain is only the beginning. From here, we’ll follow the Continental Divide along a ridge that skirts the top of Tyndall Gorge, climbing ever higher toward the lofty Hallett Peak. Every step along the ridge rewards you with sweeping panoramas of jagged peaks, alpine lakes, and valleys carved by glaciers over millennia.
Finally, standing atop Hallett Peak, you’ll be greeted with breathtaking views in every direction—a true crowning achievement after four days of epic hiking. The effort, the climbs, the long miles—they all converge in this moment, and it’s one to savor. We’ll take time to rest, enjoy a well- earned lunch, and drink in the surrounding splendor before beginning our return hike. The journey back gives a chance to reflect on the adventure, relive the highlights, and carry the memory of the Rockies with you as we wind down the trail.
This marks your final day in the Colorado Rockies—a moment to slow down and take in the setting that’s been home for the past several days. Ease into the morning with a relaxed breakfast, a deep breath of mountain air, and a last look at the surrounding peaks. Whether you wander through town, capture a few final photos, or simply pause to reflect on the journey behind you, the experience lingers. When it’s time to move on, you’ll leave with lasting memories—and a trace of the Rockies’ spirit carried forward into whatever comes next.
