Reason #358 Why We Love Bhutan

06.08.2012

There are so many reasons to love Bhutan, and to want to go there for trekking and touring, but near the top of the list must be their attitude about what is important in life.

Much has been written, of course, about their concept of Gross National Happiness. But now we read that they have more or less banned driving on Tuesdays.

That’s right, starting this week, only hybrid or electric cars may ply the streets between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. in local town centers.

The reasoning? According to Bhutan’s national newspaper Kuensel, they are to “seize the opportunity to contemplate the fragile nature of our precious Himalayan mountain ecology” and to “walk for health and promote [the] joy of walking, together with friends, family and colleagues, and thereby promote interaction and community vitality.”

We say the world could use some of that. And it just shows, once again, that Bhutan isn’t just a great place to go for a trek or cultural tour. It’s also a great place to slow down and be reminded of what’s important in life.
