Description
This immersive journey through Guatemala combines adventure, culture, and unforgettable volcanic landscapes. Over the course of the trip, you’ll summit three iconic volcanoes, an impressive accomplishment that offers both challenge and reward without requiring technical climbing skills.
A true highlight is an overnight on the slopes of Acatenango Volcano, where you’ll watch nearby Fuego Volcano erupt in dramatic fashion under the night sky. Beyond the volcanoes, the journey includes time at the stunning caldera lake of Atitlán, a summit of Atitlán Volcano itself, and a climb of Pacaya Volcano, capped off with a memorable experience of pizza cooked directly on the hot volcanic rock.
This is a day-trekking adventure across varied climates and elevations, with challenging hiking days balanced by comfortable hotel stays each night. Led by experienced local guides with decades of expertise, this trip offers deep insight into Guatemala’s landscapes, culture, and volcanic heart.
Enjoy a private airport transfer to Antigua, Guatemala’s tranquil and historic capital. Set in a mile-high mountain basin, this UNESCO World Heritage city offers plenty of time to explore its cobblestone streets, colorful architecture, and surrounding volcano views. This evening, we gather for a group briefing with your guides.
Today our adventure begins with a hike on one of Guatemala’s most active volcanoes. We drive about an hour from Antigua, passing small villages in the foothills of Pacaya, before reaching the trailhead. The hike starts with a short but steep incline, then eases into a more gradual ascent.
Our high point reaches approximately 7,500 ft, making this an excellent introduction to our three-volcano journey. The day’s highlight comes when we bake pizza directly on lava-heated rocks—a truly unforgettable experience. After the hike, we return to Antigua for dinner and a well-earned night of rest.
After a private transfer to Acatenango Volcano, we begin a challenging ascent through four distinct microclimates, sharing trails with local farmers before entering an old-growth cloud forest. The climb gradually gains elevation as sweeping views open across the highlands.
By afternoon, we reach our campsite high on Acatenango’s slopes, with commanding views of Antigua below and neighboring Fuego Volcano, one of Central America’s most active peaks. As night falls, Fuego often puts on a dramatic display, with glowing lava flows illuminating the sky. Overnight camping on Acatenango.
After breakfast, we make our summit push to the top of Acatenango. The climb is short but steep, following a gravel scree trail at high elevation. Reaching the summit rewards us with expansive views across Guatemala and, on clear days, as far as Mexico.
We then descend the full length of the volcano, taking in morning views of Agua and Fuego volcanoes. At the base, we enjoy a gourmet farm-to-table lunch at a private macadamia estate near Fuego before transferring onward to our next destination.
Travel from Antigua to the shores of Lake Atitlán, one of the world’s most striking caldera lakes. As we descend from the rim of the caldera, sweeping views open across the lake and surrounding volcanoes. A scenic boat ride brings us across the water to our lakeside base, passing traditional villages deeply connected to the land.
This evening, settle into a beautiful lakeside hotel and enjoy sunset views over the lake.
Today is our final and most challenging volcano ascent. We depart before sunrise for an early transfer to the village of Santiago, where we meet our local guides and begin the climb. With over 5,000 ft of elevation gain, this steady ascent is demanding, but rewarding as the rising sun reveals sweeping views over Lake Atitlán below.
After a steep final push over rock and scree, we reach the summit of Atitlán Volcano, where panoramic views of the Central American Volcanic Arc unfold around us. Following a well-earned lunch at the top, we begin our careful descent, returning to the trailhead and back to our lakeside hotel in the late afternoon—just in time for one last sunset over Lake Atitlán.
Morning transfer to Guatemala City for your return flight home.
