Insurance Requirements for Embark Adventures

Essential medical and evacuation coverage

Insurance Requirements

Embark adventures are designed to take you far off the beaten path — but that also means access to medical care can be very limited. That’s why supplemental insurance isn’t optional, it’s required. Every traveler must carry a policy that covers a minimum of $100,000 in medical expenses and $100,000 in evacuation and repatriation.

Imagine being on a trek in Nepal or a climb in Ecuador and suffering an injury; without coverage, the cost of a helicopter evacuation or specialized treatment can be overwhelming. Insurance ensures that you have immediate access to the care you need, without the burden of massive out-of-pocket costs.

It’s not just about emergencies, either. Remote expeditions can involve altitude sickness, unexpected weather, or accidents that make quick evacuation essential. Having this protection in place means you, your guides, and your fellow adventurers can focus on the journey itself, knowing you’re prepared for whatever comes your way.

At Embark, we see insurance as peace of mind: a commitment to your safety and security in some of the most beautiful but challenging environments in the world.

How to Choose the Right Travel Insurance for Embark Expeditions

Travel Insurance for Embark Adventures: Medical, Evacuation & Cancellation Coverage

From coverage basics to added protection

Choosing The Right Policy

You are free to choose any insurance provider, as long as your policy meets Embark’s minimum requirements. Be sure to read the fine print carefully: your coverage must not include altitude limits or activity exclusions for trekking, climbing, or any activities included in your itinerary. While trip cancellation insurance is not required, Embark strongly recommends it. These policies can reimburse prepaid expenses if your trip is canceled or interrupted due to covered circumstances. Many comprehensive or “Cancel For Any Reason” policies must be purchased within 10–14 days of submitting your trip deposit.

For most Embark trips, policies can be purchased through providers such as Squaremouth, which allows you to compare plans, or World Nomads, a simple and reputable option for adventure travel. When selecting a policy, ensure it includes at least $100,000 in emergency medical coverage and $100,000 in evacuation and repatriation.  For technical expeditions — Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, Greenland, or Aconcagua — Embark recommends coverage through Global Rescue, which has no activity or altitude exclusions and provides specialized support for high-risk, remote environments. Travelers on these trips must coordinate directly with Global Rescue in the event of an emergency.

In general, you can expect a comprehensive policy that meets all of Embark’s requirements to cost anywhere from 5% to 12% of your total trip cost.  “Cancel for Any Reason” policies can cost up to 40% of your trip costs. Once your policy is purchased, submit full documentation to Embark no later than 90 days prior to departure, and carry a copy of your policy details with you during the trip, including the insurer’s emergency contact number.
