Description

The Presidential Range in New Hampshire’s White Mountains is home to the iconic Presidential Traverse, a rugged journey across alpine ridgelines and storied summits. Our immersive take on the Traverse utilizes the historic Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) hut system, allowing us to hike the entirety of the Presidentials while tagging up to seven mountain summits along the way.

Though Mount Washington tops out at just 6,288 feet, this range delivers some of the most challenging and rewarding terrain in the country—with rocky summits, sweeping above-treeline ridges, and nonstop elevation gain and loss packed into a short distance. The payoff is immense: breathtaking panoramas, wild alpine landscapes, and a deep sense of accomplishment in one of the Northeast’s most iconic mountain environments.

Each night, we stay in AMC’s Alps-style backcountry huts, a nearly 150-year-old system steeped in tradition. Expect bunk-style accommodations, hearty family-style meals, potable water, and the unforgettable charm of the quirky Hut “Croo”, known for their skits, storytelling, and musical wake-ups. Experiencing these huts offers a rare window into the culture and traditions that make trekking in the White Mountains truly unique.

Your adventure begins at Hub North, a Lodge and Glampground at the northern base of New Hampshire’s Presidential Range. After settling in, meeting the team, and enjoying refreshments, we’ll complete an orientation, lunch packing, and gear check for the traverse.

Before dinner, guests can explore the onsite trails, visit a local swimming hole, or relax with lawn games or a book. The day concludes with a locally prepared gourmet dinner and time to connect as a group.

Start with a hot gourmet breakfast before a short drive to the Appalachia Trailhead and the beginning of the Traverse. The hike ascends through northern hardwood forests, high-elevation pines, and into the alpine zone, offering a classic introduction to the steep, rocky trails that define White Mountains hiking.

We’ll hike at a steady, manageable pace to Madison Spring Hut, with time to explore the alpine zone and, if conditions and interest allow, a short side hike to the summit of Mount Madison. Perched just above treeline at the base of Mount Madison’s summit cone, the hut offers sweeping views and a small alpine lake overlooking Madison Gulf—an unforgettable first night in the Presidential Range.

Today we traverse the northern Presidential Range on the Appalachian Trail, culminating with a summit of Mount Washington—the highest peak in the Northeast. This section requires preparation for rapidly changing weather, including wind and cooler, high-altitude temperatures.

The day is spent entirely above treeline on rock and packed dirt, with generally good travel and some sections of talus requiring careful footing. With a full day to explore this spectacular stretch, we’ll have time to take in the views and tag additional summits as conditions and energy allow. The day ends at Lakes of the Clouds Hut, set beside two alpine lakes at the base of Mount Monroe, where we’ll enjoy expansive western views, a memorable sunset, and a well-earned night above the clouds.

We continue south across the remaining three Presidential peaks, with much of the day spent above treeline on more moderate terrain than the previous day. While the elevation changes ease, the views remain spectacular, with sweeping vistas to the south and west.

From the summit of Mount Pierce, we’ll take in a final look back at the Presidential Range and reflect on the ground we’ve covered. The day concludes at Mizpah Hut, offering a cozy night tucked into the forest just below treeline.

Our final day begins with a half-day descent to Crawford Notch State Park and the Appalachian Mountain Club Highland Center. We’ll gather for a celebratory lunch and reflect on our journey together, having completed the iconic Presidential Traverse.

After lunch, we’ll say goodbye to the White Mountains and travel south to Boston, where guests can head home or continue their Northeast adventures independently.
