Hike Madeira: A Tropical Paradise for Adventurers

Embark on an unforgettable adventure and experience the magic of Madeira.

To hike the jagged misty mountains of Madeira island is to disappear into a raw and wild landscape that challenges your body and treats your senses to a feast of tropical amazement. Whether you’re toiling up the famous Pico Ruivo, the tallest mountain on the island, or meandering along the famous ‘levadas’ (aqueducts) of Madeira, this land will impress and engage you every step of the way.

Madeira is a Portuguese enclave, located just west of Morocco. This 250,000-person island was uninhabited when it was discovered by the Portuguese. Its famous levada irrigation system led Madeira to become the world’s second-largest producer of sugarcane in the 15th century. These same aqueducts form a unique basis for a comprehensive network of hiking trails that crisscross the island. Indeed, this volcanic terrain is extremely steep and the levadas create a way to explore more moderately. Don’t be fooled though: there are still plenty of challenges available to those who want them. The island hosts an annual ultra trail race that crosses the island over 72 miles and more than 27,000ft elevation gain for those looking to push the limits. Embark’s exploration opportunities on the island combine the levada system and some more challenging trails. Our island traverse takes you along ocean cliff sides, up mountain ridgelines, and from waterfall to waterfall, a comprehensive exploration.

Madeira is exceptional in its terrain and scenery, but it is also wonderfully managed in its infrastructure. A comprehensive tunnel system cutting through steep peaks makes traveling around the island by car incredibly efficient- and fun! Additionally, there’s that wonderful European vibe of free access to a plethora of public services including amazingly envisioned natural oceanside pools, beaches, waterfalls, and pathways. In one day you experience sunrise on top of the island’s tallest mountain and sunset bathing in the natural pools, with waves breaking at the volcanic rock face. And you can do all of this ending each day sleeping in the comfort of a hotel with a hot shower. We are thrilled to share with you this awe-inspiring paradise. Madeira is truly an idyllic wonderland for a hiking adventure, and there may even be a few hidden secrets in store… you’ll have to visit to discover all this place has to offer.
