Ladakh’s Pangong Tso

03.10.2012

We think you’ll really enjoy reading this article from the Deccan (India) Herald  about a drive to Pangong Tso, a sacred lake in Ladakh. Ladakh is much on our minds these days, as we are working on trips that will include lakes just such as this: lakes above 14,000 feet in elevation, along the border with Tibet, surrounded by peaks and monasteries and traditional people.

Of course, we don’t want to drive — Pangong Tso is about give hours by road from Leh — we want to trek, and we intend to, to other off-road lakes and other spectacular destinations. Still, this is good reading; here’s a sample from the article:

This is paradise, without the polluting presence of Adam and Eve who are obviously in hiding. Not a soul in sight along miles of deserted highway. But small chortens, crudely fashioned from wayside stones, mark the passage of travellers who have sought divine blessings for a safe journey. Faith is the sole constant in a life fraught with natural hazards and uncertainties and Ladakh’s many monasteries bear witness to its power.
