From a porter to a guide
Kilimanjaro Guide: Wilfred Ngowi
Wilfred is one of Embark’s young, strong, confident guides; he is a smart, grounded person, introspective and he also happens to have just gotten married last year.
His first trip on Kilimanjaro was back in 2011 when he was just 21 years old. Unlike so many young men in Tanzania, Wilfred decided early on to make a career for himself and work hard and save hard to carve out a future for his family. He worked his way quickly through the ranks, starting as a porter and proving his capability and responsibility time and again. Now, with over 300 summits of Kilimanjaro, he has become an expert guide. He says he enjoys climbing as a guide because of the opportunity to make new friends from different backgrounds, who he can discuss different ways of life and exchange ideas. He appreciates that, through the climbers, he can learn about different cultures and traditions. Above photo by Marty Skovlund, Jr./Coffee or Die.
